Description

4 oz. brown glass bottle.(Sambucus sp.). Elderberry juice or tincture has proven to have strong antiviral effects since the berries contain proteins that prevent viruses from entering cells. It is recommended as a daily tonic throughout the cold and flu season.

This opposite-branched shrub grows up to twelve feet tall. The stems are long and slender with opposite branching. The bark is rough, grayish-brown to black. Soft light tan to orange-brown pith is found inside the stems and branches. Since courtship flutes were fashioned from the stems, Elder is known as the “Tree of Music” among some Shoshoni tribes. The flowers of the Elder are small and cream colored and are borne in dense, rounded umbels. The round, dark blue or black berries appear in the autumn. The Elder is found on moist sites, mostly at elevations of 2,000 to 5,000 feet.

Antirheumatic (berries) – The berries of the Elder make a useful tonic for arthritis and rheumatism. Simmer fresh, stemmed berries in water to cover for two to three minutes, then express the juice. To preserve, bring to a boil with one part honey to ten parts of juice. Take one glass diluted with hot water twice a day.

Antiviral – Since the 1980s, Israeli virologist Madeleine Mumcuoglu, PhD, of the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center in Jerusalem has studied the antiviral properties of elderberry. In laboratory research, she discovered compounds in elderberry that bind to spikes on the surface of virus cells, preventing them from puncturing cell membranes. The high concentrations of flavonoids in elderberry inhibit the action of neuraminidase, the enzyme that helps the flu virus attach to and penetrate new cells. Mumcuoglu tested Sambucol, the proprietary elderberry extract she helped develop, against various strains of influenza A and B in the laboratory and found the herb effective against all types of flu. Take 1 to 2 tsp. of the tinctured berries daily as a preventative. Double the dosage when experiencing flu symptoms.

Cold Remedy (flowers/leaves/berries) – For the treatment of colds and influenza take three cups of Elderflower tea per day, using two teaspoons dried flowers per cup of hot water. A tea of dried elder leaves and flowers is helpful in any catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract such as hay fever and sinusitis. Use one teaspoon each of dried leaves and flowers per cup of hot water. Elderberry Syrup is used to prevent colds and flu, as is the tincture made from the fresh fruit. The berries contain proteins that prevent viruses from entering cells. Tincture dosage is 2 teaspoons twice daily throughout the winter months.

Gynecological aid – The berries are a nutrient-rich restorative tonic and are given after childbirth to help build the blood.
